Resuscitative Thoracotomy Course

Overview & Objectives

Recuscitative thoracotomy for trauma is infrequently required but can be imminently life-saving. This course aims to improve clinical decision-making in the context of severe chest injuries and develop life-saving procedural skills. At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Have confidence in clinical decision making in peri-arrest trauma patients with major chest injuries
  • Perform Resuscitative Thoracotomy and immediate life-saving interventions within the thoracic cavity (such as drainage of pericardial haematoma, internal cardiac massage)
  • Target life-saving interventions in the chest using standardised clinical decision making
  • Emphasise the importance of standardisation of equipment and procedural technique for life saving interventions in trauma
  • Contextualise the role of Resuscitative Thoracotomy in your clinical environment

This course is led by highly skilled faculty of surgeons and emergency medicine physicians, all experienced in performing and managing resuscitative thoracotomy.
