Establishment of an integrated KSMC Trauma Service is fundamental in ensuring an effective program to clinically coordinate the care required of a Level 1 Trauma Centre. The Alfred Trauma Service is the largest and most active Trauma Service in Australasia, admitting over 7,000 trauma patients annually, with 1,200 of these being classed as major trauma. Patients receive comprehensive multidisciplinary care leading to excellent outcomes, with morbidity and mortality amongst the lowest of any major trauma centre in the developed world.
Key Objectives & Outcomes
ensure that sound and evidence-based protocols are available upon establishment of the KSMC Trauma Service and Trauma Centre. Local and institutional factors will be integrated into the protocols. This will promote evidence-based practices for KSMC trauma team care.
Building on this concept will be the establishment of an Advanced Trauma Physician Training Program. This program will comprise four main elements:

2. Longer term accredited international Fellowship training for KSMC Physicians in Trauma and related subspecialties. Suitable candidates will also have the opportunity to complete a Masters Program in Advanced Emergency & Trauma Management in collaboration with Monash University, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences.
3. Visiting Professor Program for senior specialists at Professorial level involved in subspecialties of trauma shall visit KSMC and work alongside a counterpart. This will allow assessment of current KSMC services as well as transfer of knowledge and skills.
4. Virtual Clinical Rounds providing opportunity to present educational cases for both KSMC and The Alfred.
In addition, there will be the establishment of relevant nursing exchanges and an Advanced Nursing Training Program. Selected nurses from KSMC shall undergo training with nurses and physicians at The Alfred and have the opportunity to complete established advanced training programs in Trauma Nursing and Critical Care.
