Dr Helen Stergiou
BSc (Hons) MSc MBBS FACEM
Helen was undertaking a Masters of NeuroScience in 1988 (she is a Claustrum expert) when she was encouraged to complete a Medical Degree in order to engage in Medical Research.
Post graduating from the University of Melbourne Helen completed contrasting Medical and Surgical rotations and also spent time as a trainee in Psychiatry. In 1998 Helen commenced training in Emergency Medicine at The Alfred whilst concurrently working as an Anatomy Tutor at the University of Melbourne. Helen worked at The Northern Hospital Emergency Department from 2004-2010 including as Director of the Emergency Department from 2007-2010.
A return to The Alfred in 2010 provided myriad Clinician-Manager responsibilities. In 2015 Helen commenced the role of Trauma Consultant - "impressive, fascinating, humbling, a privilege" is how Helen describes a typical day on the Trauma Service. Since 1988 Helen has been passionately involved in Education with some of her inputs including: University Tutor across both Melbourne and Monash Universities, Supervisor of Intern Training, Registrar Education, Conference Presentations.
Helen is animated by Human Factors in the Acute Clinical Setting and by Trauma in the Older Patient.
